One appealing aspect of the Forerunner 955 versus the Fenix 7 and Epix 2 is that its plastic case is much lighter: the 955 weighs 53g compared with 70-80g for the Fenix and Epix, though of course the more expensive watches do use more aesthetically appealing and tougher materials.
For songs I own that I’ve manually imported into Apple Music, this is relatively easy: I just sync those songs in a dedicated running playlist, then connect my watch to my Mac and sync. But most songs are DRM protected and not purchased so I dont condone this tip: but you can technically listen to Apple Music on the web and rip from there.
I think all I have on my Fenix 5+ is Garmin, and when I went to London a few years ago I bought British topo maps from Garmin using Garmin Express for the Fenix, and they were fine in London. Not all Garmin maps are ridiculously expensive, and some of the latest devices come with free worldwide coverage, either on board or downloadable.
The Fenix 7X (51mm) offers more battery life and solar power options. Garmin does have "apps" per se, but the Connect Store has plenty of watch faces and extra data fields for sports tracking
The 55 does not have the ability to store and play music without a phone. I think this is a pretty comprehensive list of Garmins that can store and play music without your phone: Garmin D2 series. Garmin Fenix 5 Plus series. Garmin Fenix 6 Pro series. Garmin Fenix 7 series.
